Renewed meeting point for young Brusselers in the city centre

Thanks to its location in the Jardin aux Fleurs neighbourhood in the centre of Brussels and to the great demand of sports facilities in this district, the sports hall of primary school De “Kleurdoos” is being used all the time. During the day, the sports hall is used by the primary school itself and other schools. After school hours, at weekends and in the holiday periods, “IBO De Buiteling”, “vzw Circus Zonder Handen”, Brussels Boxing Academy, playground “Buiten De Lijntjes” and “Kinder Voetbal Academie” have been enjoying the sports hall for years. Next school year, it will also be home to the Brussels Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy.

Thanks to its location in the Jardin aux Fleurs neighbourhood in the centre of Brussels and to the great demand of sports facilities in this district, the sports hall of primary school De “Kleurdoos” is being used all the time.

“Sport is important for good physical and mental health. This has become even clearer in recent months. More than ever, we want to make sure that all our Brussels kets stay active, especially during this special period. We have to ensure that this can be done in safe and decent conditions. The sports hall of De Kleurdoos is a meeting place for many young Brusselers and must therefore meet the current standards,” says Flemish Community Commission (VGC) member for Youth and Sports Pascal Smet.

The sports hall and equipment both were in need of thorough renovation, which is why VGC college member Pascal Smet has made funds available for the renovation of several structural elements of the sports hall (ceiling, walls, electricity and substructure of the floor) and for the replacement of sports equipment. Much of this equipment goes back to 1955 and now logically has to be replaced.

“Thanks to these investments, we can continue our role of wide-ranging school sustainably, together with all sports and leisure organisations. In this way, we are broadening our social educational role and we are giving the local children and young people the opportunity to develop,” says Jurgen Wayenberg, general director of “GO! Scholengroep Brussel”.

66,000 euros were made available for the structural renovation works. To this, 66,550 euros have now been added for the purchase of fixed sports equipment and durable sports material, which will be used by both schools and after-school initiatives.

The Flemish government had already invested in the parquet floor renovation in the sports hall, by placing a code lock system, an AED device and by hiring an usher (part-time).

In January 2021, the sports hall was ready for use again. Currently, it is being further equipped with reliable and safe sports equipment.
