The abandoned Ferme du Chaudron in Anderlecht will become an organic agricultural centre with locally grown vegetables. Visitors will not only have the opportunity to buy products or eat them in the local restaurant, but also to learn about sustainable food.

Secretary of State for Urbanism and Heritage Pascal Smet (one.brussels) confirms that Bruxelles Environnement has obtained the planning permit.

“This old farm has been neglected for a long time. The permit will bring a new future. Thanks to my colleague Alain Maron, Bruxelles Environnement and the resources of the European Regional Development Fund, agriculture has been given a new chance. In this way, we are taking the first step towards the announced renovation of the Parc de la Pede area. We are giving the neighbourhood back to the Brusselers,” concludes Smet.

The site currently has a neglected farmstead and a house. These spaces will be transformed into an agricultural centre at the outskirts. Visitors will not only have the opportunity to discover and buy locally grown crops, they will also be able to learn about sustainable food and local, organic cultivation. All of this is fully in line with the broader agriculture project BoerenBruxselPaysans. Through this project, Bruxelles Environnement aims to help the Brussels Region in its transition to a sustainable food chain.

Specifically, the Ferme du Chaudron will contain:

- a vegetable garden
- areas for the processing and packaging of agricultural products
- rooms for workshops on local food
- a sales point for cultivated and processed products from the farm and its surroundings
- a restaurant where these products are served and, in this way, highlighted
- a multifunctional room
- two dwellings for people working on the farm (e.g. via wwoofing) or for the caretaker
- sanitary facilities for employees and visitors
Farmers, and especially market gardeners, can also come to the site to try out the processing and distribution of sustainable food in ideal conditions. Also if they do not have the right infrastructure, Ferme du Chaudron gives them a chance to get started.

The new use of the old farm also fits in nicely with the function of Parc de la Pede. Locals and Brusselers enjoy spending their leisure time in this area, and thanks to the many functions of the renovated Ferme du Chaudron, many will find something to their liking. The farm will be the ideal place to learn about traditional, local and organic agricultural production in the open.
