100 % electric bus fleet by 2030
2018 – 2030 Brussels-Capital Region
The STIB fleet will be fully electric by 2030. That’s why the Brussels government set up an ambitious plan and made funds available in 2018. Both the quality of air and life will improve considerably in Brussels.
In a first stage in 2018, the STIB purchased 235 hybrid buses in order to replace the most polluting buses, further expand the bus fleet and realise the ambitions of the new Bus Plan. This purchase was based on the advice of a special commission, composed of experts of the VUB, the university of Namur, Innoviris, Brussels Mobility, Bruxelles Environnement and the STIB. The 235 hybrid buses were purchased within the planned amount of 126 million euro.
These buses, in service since 2018, made it possible to replace the 117 most polluting buses (euro 2) and to increase the bus offer by 118 extra vehicles.
The same year, the first electric buses also appeared in the city, more precisely on line 33, which connects the Dansaert area in the centre of the lower town to Sablon and Louise in the upper town. 2.1 million euros were provided for this purpose.
All Brussels buses are currently being systematically replaced by different electric models. By 2030 the STIB will electrify the entire fleet.
