A highlight of Jean-Baptiste Dewin’s career as a hospital architect is now protected as a monument. The protection involves the remaining buildings of the original Saint-Pierre Hospital in Rue Haute, namely the administrative building, the former nursing school and the entrance pavilion.
This hospital complex was built between 1929 and 1935 and is one of Jean-Baptiste Dewin's most remarkable works. The main building no longer exists, but the buildings on the street side still have a strong appearance, such as the administrative building and the former nursing school in Art Deco style, which are impressive, among other things, because of their size. The entrance pavilion, on the other hand, has one storey under a mansard roof.
These tree buildings characterise this part of Rue Haute and are an integral part of it, thanks to the shop windows on the ground floor.
“After the prison of Saint-Gilles and La Mémé in Woluwe, it is now time for the former Saint-Pierre Hospital, the highlight of Dewin’s career as a hospital architect. We are definitively protecting what remains of this Art Deco complex. This way, a remarkable example of hospital buildings from the beginning of the 20th century will be preserved," says Pascal Smet, Brussels Secretary of State for Heritage.
Dewin’s sober yet decorative style, with picturesque details, is reflected in this former hospital. The buildings characterise the transition of pavilion structures to an architecture of hospital units with a corridor system and are important witnesses of Dewin's work.
The protection as a monument involves in particular the front and rear facades, the entrance hall and staircase of the administrative building, the front and rear facades of the former nursing school and the roofs and front and rear facades of the entrance pavilion of Saint-Pierre Hospital, located Rue Haute 296A-322 in Brussels. The CPAS of the city of Brussels submitted the application for protection.
